The 31st Annual Meeting of the Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers will be held June 9-11, 2016, at Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Missouri.
This year, we will be “Focusing on the Future of Defense” meaning not only will our keynote speakers be discussing technology and defending against the growing trends from the Plaintiff’s bar, but we have also added two additional optional Thursday afternoon sessions designed specifically with younger defense lawyers in mind. We encourage all MODL Members to join us for these incredible talks and encourage all firms to send not only their partners and principals, but also their associates.
We also invite all members to bring their families to Big Cedar, which is one of the nation’s premier vacation destinations. Please note that there are no additional registration fees to do so. MODL, with the help of its sponsors, has arranged a Kid’s Program again this year which includes the great Fishing Contest, as well as a room of inflatables and activities during our Awards Dinner. Of course, the resort also offers swimming, horseback riding, boating, biking and hiking for everyone to enjoy. For the adults, the MODL Golf Tournament will be held on Friday afternoon at Buffalo Ridge Golf Course, with a cocktail reception and our Awards Dinner to follow.
Traditionally, the Annual Meeting kicked off with the “President’s Welcome Reception” on Thursday evening. I dare not incur the wrath of President Bellm by altering this event, but that afternoon, attendees will have the option of two additional sessions which will focus on “Young Lawyers”. On Thursday, from 2:00 – 3:00, we will host a “Judicial Clerk Panel” featuring Clerks from Missouri’s Supreme Court, Appeals Courts, and Circuit Courts, as well as a Clerk from the Federal District Court. From 3:00 – 4:00, we will host a “Young Partner Panel” featuring young partners from throughout the State of Missouri. Then from 4:00 – 6:00 we will have a special “Young Lawyers” Reception, allowing attendees of these sessions to talk in smaller groups with not only the speakers, but also our sponsors. After which, we will join all other attendees, including President Bellm, for his Reception at Top of the Rock. These special sessions offer associates and young partners an unparalleled opportunity to speak directly with those that administer our judiciary and those that have very recently walked in their shoes.
On Friday, we will hear from Paul F. Unger from Columbus, Ohio. He will speak on both the use of technology to make a case in front of jury and on use of iPads by litigators. We will also hear from Jill F. Bechtold and Mark Gray from Jacksonville, Florida who will discuss the growing trend of the “Reptile Strategy” and how to defend against it. On Saturday morning we will hear from our Executive Director, Randy Scheer, on the “Legislative Update”. After which we are excited to host our “Appellate Judges Panel” and our “Trial Judges Panel”, both full of distinguished judges from across the state.
